Kiting at Galle Face – Fun Thing to Do within Colombo City

Hey guys, hope you are doing well. Today I’m going to give you a hint on one of things to do in Sri Lanka, specifically in Colombo City. But before that, I would like to highlight, that this article is intended for foreigners, because the locals are well aware of this thing.

It is obvious that Colombo City is not a place to feel the beauty of the nature. There are a lot of things you can do in Colombo though, which are found interesting by a lot of foreigners. Such as shopping (from street sellers to expensive shopping malls), dining (from street food to five star hotels), cycling, being comfortable at a five star hotel, etc. And the thing I’m going to tell you about today, kiting at Galle Face, is also very joyful and interesting activity to take part.

Galle Face is a long straight beach, with a ground next to it. The name Galle Face is given because it is considered that the Galle Road (road to down south) begins from there. The place is used for a number of social, entertainment and government functions, including the National Day in most years.

Galle Face beach is the busiest and most crowded beach on the weekends. Check this video taken on a Sunday evening. So if you could avoid weekends to visit there.:)

Kiting at Galle Face

If you have some spare time while you are in Colombo you might consider doing this. But it is always recommended to visit Galle Face either in the early morning or in the evening to avoid the harsh sunlight. Even though you are not up to kiting, Galle Face is very calm and relaxing place (when it is not crowded) to pay a visit. I really enjoyed the sunset in Galle Face each and every time I visited there.

Kiting in Galle Face is very common among locals. Not only kids, adults also tend to fly kites here. The main reason is, there is plenty of room for kiting in the Galle Face ground. And also heavy wind is always present in Galle Face. Therefore, kiting is an evergreen activity in Galle Face. Nowadays a lot of foreigners also can be seen kiting there. That is why I thought of writing this article in the first place.

If you don’t know how to make a kite or if you don’t have a time, you don’t need to worry at all. There you will find a number of kite sellers with various types and sizes of kites. In the kiting season, kite festivals are often taking place here. Unfortunately, I couldn’t visit any yet.:( I recently visited Galle Face (in the kiting season) and the number of kites there were uncountable, literally. Check this video out.

In my recent visit to Galle Face I saw some unique and interesting kites.

The Peocock

This kite is a peccock, literally. First have a look at this video.

This kite made a really beautiful sight in the sky. The owners of the kite seem to be from the armed forces (guessed from their postures).

The Peacock Has Landed

A Really Long Snake (I Guess)

I guess the name of this kite is ‘Cobra’, not sure though.:) But anyhow it is really long. Check this video below.

Its tail was longer than this even. But the latter was hit by a vehicle on the road and broken.

Be warned, if you are visiting there with kids, you might face some troubles.:) There are a number of small toy shops there. And you might find it hard to take them away from them.

Too tired?

What if you are tired with kiting, walking and playing with sea waves? There are lots of food stalls along the Galle Face ground. You will find various types of foods and beverages there. Such as fruits, pickles, rotti, wade, kottu roti, rice, noodles, pastries etc.

Obviously they are delicious, but be noted that I can’t certify the cleanliness of the foods you will find there. There are a few food stalls that provide seating facilities also. But the best way is to have a seat on a bench (normally it is very hard to find an available one), steps or edge of the built platform.

If you visit Galle Face in an evening, make sure you are there until the sun sets. You know why.

So that is one of things to do in Colombo if you have some spare time. See you guys in the next post.
