Lipton’s Seat, Haputale – An Amazing Panoramic View

What is Lipton’s Seat?

Lipton’s Seat is one of observation points where you can have an amazing panoramic view of nature in Sri Lanka, just like Sandathenna (Moon Plains) and World’s End (Horton Plains). The place has named ‘Lipton’s Seat’ after the famous tea planter ‘Sir Thomas Lipton’. He has used this place to observe his tea plantations below.

Name Board of Lipton’s Seat

It is situated on the top of Poonagala hill, Haputale. If you are lucky and there isn’t mist or clouds, the whole Southern plain of the country is visible from there. By the time we visited, unfortunately the sky isn’t totally clear. One of our gang said that if the sky is clear, even the sea can be seen from there (correct me if it is wrong). But either there is mist or not, you will be amazed by the view for sure.

How to Reach…

Lipton’s Seat is situated in Haputale.

To get to the top, you have to climb a mountain surrounded by rich tea plantations. There are two ways to reach Lipton’s Seat, both the roads are running through tea plantations. You can either come from Bandarawela via Nayabedda estate or Haputale via Dambetenna estate.

Vehicles can go to the very top, but an experienced and skillful driver is highly recommended. Because the slope is very steep, the road is very snaky and in some areas road is heavily damaged.

The sights along the way to the top are not less beautiful. I bet you will find several places to stop and click a few snaps, on the way to top.

At the summit there is an observation point (hut) built. You can get on it and view around easily.

Observation Hut at the Summit

If you are willing to go there, make sure you visit early in the morning. It is said that there is more chance of having a clear sky in the early morning.

These two panos are taken from the observation hut.

So that’s about Lipton’s Seat. If you are visiting Lipton’s Seat, consider visiting Adisham Bungalow also, which is nearby.
