Adisham Bungalow – A Great Illustration of British Architecture in Sri Lanka
Even locals might never heard of Adisham Bungalow, because it is not a very famous place. But it is a beautiful place with a nice background. I won’t list it as a compulsory place to visit in Sri Lanka. But if you are travelling passing ‘Haputale’ or if you are visiting Lipton’s Seat, and you have some time, it is worth it to take a look at this place.
How to Reach
Adisham Bungalow is situated 4km away from Haputale Bus Stand on ‘Temple Road’.
Some Historical Details
Adisham Bungalow (aka Adisham Hall) is a clear illustration of old British Architecture in Sri Lanka. It has been built in 1931, but it still looks so young and strong. It stands very elegantly and calmly on an edge of a cliff. Nowadays it houses the Saint Benedict’s Monastery.
The house was built in 1931 by an English aristocrat and planter Sir Thomas Villiers, former Chairman of George Steuart Co, a trading and estate agency based in Colombo.
Since then, there were several owners of this house. For now, it is in the possession of Roman Catholic Church and hence converted into a monastery.
On a side, there is a stunning observation point which gives a beautiful sight of the valley below.
There is a little sad news that the monastery is open for visitors only in weekends, public holidays and school vacations. You may arrange your time accordingly.
Accommodation Facility
You might find it interesting that they are providing accommodation inside the Adisham Bungalow. It will be a unique experience to stay a night at a monastery. Prices are indicated as 3,000 LKR per adult and 1,500 LKR per child. It should be noted that, they highlighted that you should not expect hotel facilities there, and you should be considerate of the rules of the community.
For more details on accommodation facilities and history of the place, you may visit the official website here. And, if a monastery isn’t your favourite choice for an accommodation, you can always consider plenty of other options.
So there is not much detail to tell you about the place. If you have to add anything or share something about Adisham Bungalow, please feel free to leave a comment below. See you soon guys.
